Why I Hunt: A Journey of Strength and Connection

This is something I have thought about quite seriously: Why do I hunt?
At first, it was all about sourcing my own meat and survival. It felt deeply rewarding to sit down to a meal, knowing the animal meat my family was enjoying was sourced from the wild, a direct result of my success as an ethical bow hunter.
But as I journeyed further into the skill of traditional bow hunting, I began to have experiences that shifted something deep inside me. These moments didn’t just change the way I hunted—they changed me.
The Moment That Changed Everything
On one particular hunt, I witnessed the power of taking a clean kill shot—one that landed so precisely the animal died within minutes before my eyes.
I was outback in western NSW with my hunting crew. We had been hiking for hours looking for goats when we finally found a group of them feeding alongside some forest, heading our way. The wind was good, the brush cover was perfect. But it was going to take a successful 18-yard side shot to take down the large billy that was before me.
I knew I needed to take the shot. I could feel it.
So, I put my big girl pants on (again) and hid in wait until the moment came. Time stood still as I took the shot. I could see it was good, I heard it go through bone, and later discovered the arrow had cut the heart! That grand old billy died within minutes before my eyes.
It felt like a miracle had unfolded before me—such a clean shot ending that wise old billy's life so quickly. It was epic. And in that moment, as the death portal opened and I took that animal’s life, I felt something extraordinary—the spirit of the animal merging with mine. A surge of energy coursed through me, unlike anything I had ever known. My body felt high—completely open and alive.
The moment was saturated with profound respect for the land, the animal’s sacrifice, and the massive amount of dedicated practice that had given me the skill to take that shot.
The Strength I Gained
But more than anything, what I felt in my body was strength.
The kind of strength I had been desperately needing.
The kind of strength that can only come from doing what is right for me—without needing anyone else's permission.
In the days after, I could feel this energy inviting me to stand firmer, to set better boundaries in my life, to have my own back in a way I hadn’t before. And when I returned home, that's exactly what I did. I carried that power with me. I felt it in my bones. It was next level.
Taking that animal’s life had gifted me something invaluable—the strength to step forward on a new life path without abandoning myself. What a gift that billy goat gave me. I will forever feel grateful.
A Huntress Awakens
And then, just before Christmas, I had another hunt—one that deepened my understanding again of why I do this.
But that’s a story for another time…
For now, I want to acknowledge something important: for me, and for many modern women, learning to shoot a traditional bow and hunt is not just about survival.
It's a way to care for the environment and reduce the massive numbers of feral animals devastating Australia's native fauna and flora.
It's a direct way to connect to country and learn how to survive sustainably.
And it's a profoundly meaningful way to connect to feminine power.
And as you know, I am all about mastering feminine power!
So, if you’re a woman in our community (or know a woman) who is ready to step into greater personal power, set rock-solid boundaries, and awaken the Huntress within, we’ll be gathering again at the end of this month to explore just that.
The power of the Huntress in all her forms!
